Mount Mgahinga / Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies in the far south western part of Uganda, the park is part of the Virunga conservation area which is the only area in the world where tourists can trek the endangered mountain gorillas. Mountain Gahinga is Uganda’s smallest national park covering an area of 33.7 kilometers squared; He Park also boasts with three of the Virunga massif volcanoes that is Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Muhabura and Mount Gahinga boardered by Rwanda and Congo.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The name Gahinga is derived from a local word Gahinga to mean “pile of stones” this is because of the piles of stones gathered by the locals to clear their farmland, the park was first gazetted as a game sanctuary in 1930 and was established as a national park in 1991. Its one of the least visited Uganda safari holiday parks but offers a great gorilla tours and mountain climbing experience.

Gorilla trekking

Mountain gorilla trekking is one of the most sought tourists’ activities in the world and tourists can trek this great apes at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. There is only one habituated gorilla family that can be trekked by tourists the Nyakagezi gorilla family. Tourists must always get permits for Mgahinga in advance because of Hugh demand only 8 permits are sold for his gorilla family in a day.

Golden monkey  trekking

Mount Mgahinga is home to several troops of golden monkey, tourists can track up to 60-100 golden monkeys in a group. Golden monkeys are very beautiful to behold as they are very playful and beautiful, they also like flash lights in cameras unlike gorillas.

Volcanic climbing

Tourists visiting mount Mgahinga national park can go for mountain climbing in volcanoes like Sabyinyo, Gahinga or Muhabura. Mount Sabyinyo will require physical fitness and experienced mountain climbers. Tourists can choose to go for less hours hiking at the slope or 8 hour round trip. The views are very spectacular where by you can see Rwanda and Congo.

Batwa trail

The Batwa trail opens tourists to a unique untamed African traditional Batwa people who are said to have lived in the forests since the ancient times, the hunter gathering guides will take you through their ancient myths about the forests and you will learn how they use different trees as herbs and also get entertained with traditional dances.

Bird watching

Mount Mgahinga national park s also home to several species of birds that can be best watched at the Buffalo cave, forests and wetlands. Some of the birds to encounter in Mgahinga are; speckled mouse,fire finch, Kivu ground thrush among the 100 species found in the park. Tourists in mount Mgahinga can sleep in Mount Mgahinga lodge, Kisoro tourists hostel, AmajambereIwachu camp and golden monkey guest house among the rest. Mount Mgahinga national park can be reached within 9-10 hours drive from Kampala and 6 hours drive from Kigali Rwanda.
